The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is urging residents to be vigilant when it comes to cryptocurrency investment scams. These scams, known as crypto romance frauds, cleverly blend elements of romance and investment fraud to deceive victims and steal their money.
In crypto romance scams, fraudsters develop online romantic relationships with unsuspecting victims. They gain trust by posing as successful crypto investors who can offer investment advice. Victims are lured into transferring funds or cryptocurrencies using fake apps and platforms. The scammers may even allow victims to withdraw small amounts initially, creating a false sense of security.
However, the truth emerges when victims attempt to withdraw larger sums. At that point, they discover that they’ve lost full access to their funds. These scams prey on emotions, combining the allure of love with promises of financial gain.
Alarming Statistics
Last year, Ontario residents fell victim to romance frauds, losing over $21 million specifically to these deceptive schemes. Meanwhile, investment fraud losses in the province totaled an astonishing $111 million. Now, fraudsters are combining both techniques—using romance as a smokescreen for their financial deception.
